How to host your first group run

Pick a loop everyone can finish, set a no-drop pace and send the invite three days out. The rest is coffee.

Ruth Hale

The hardest part of a group run is the first one. Nobody knows the route, the pace or whether anyone else will turn up. Good hosts remove every one of those doubts before Sunday.

Choose a loop, not a line

A loop of three to five kilometres lets slower runners cut it short and faster ones add a lap. Everyone finishes at the same café.

Say the pace out loud

Write the pace in the invite, then promise nobody gets dropped. Put one experienced runner at the back. It changes who feels welcome.

Invite early, remind once

Send the invite three days before and one reminder the evening before. More than that and people mute you.
